What was meant to be a celebratory event took a heartbreaking turn after a deadly stampede near Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left over 30 injured.

The incident took place as thousands of fans gathered outside the venue for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)’s IPL 2025 title win celebration at the stadium.

The crowd came up in large numbers as RCB ended an 18-year wait for the coveted IPL trophy after defeating Punjab Kings in the final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad.

What led to the stampede?

A sea of RCB fans swarmed outside the stadium early in the evening, all hoping to catch a glimpse of their favourite team arriving with the coveted trophy after a long wait of 18 years. The stampede took place as thousands of fans rushed through multiple gates in a frantic attempt to enter the stadium.

Addressing a press conference over the tragedy, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased killed in the stampede.

“11 died and 33 were injured in the stampede. This tragedy should not have happened. The government expresses deep sorrow over this incident,” the chief minister said as he informed that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the matter.

Siddaramaiah further revealed that a huge crowd had turned up for the celebration, which was far beyond their expectations.

"I don't want to defend this incident. Our government will not do politics on this. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry and given 15 days' time. People even broke the gates of the stadium. There was a stampede. No one expected such a huge crowd. The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people came," CM Siddaramaiah said.

According to witnesses, crowds overwhelmed the felicitation venue, with several videos showcasing police rushing the injured and unconscious into ambulances. Some fans who had collapsed were reportedly given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by fellow attendees.

Police struggled to control the situation as large numbers of supporters tried to force entry into the stadium simultaneously.
