Audi following Google Maps falls into ditch in Navi Mumbai

July 26, 2025 / 16:30 IST

An Audi car following navigation on Google Maps fell into a ditch in Navi Mumbai's Belapur on Saturday.

Assistant Police Inspector Belapur Narayan Palampalle said that they rescued a woman driving the car With the assistance of the boat belonging to the marine security team.

"At about 1:00 a.m. on Friday, we received information about an incident involving an Audi car that had fallen into the Belapur ditch. Our team, along with marine security guards and local police, went there and found that a woman was heading towards Ulwe, following Google Maps," he said.

"Because of this, instead of going over the bridge, her car went below and fell into the ditch, causing the accident. We provided information to senior police officers. With the assistance of the boat belonging to the marine security team, we safely rescued the woman. She was alone in that car when the incident happened," he added.

This isn’t the first time Google Maps has misled users, resulting in accidents.

In a tragic incident last year, three people lost their lives after their car, guided by Google Maps, veered onto a damaged bridge and plunged 50 feet into a river in Faridpur. The vehicle was travelling from Bareilly to Dataganj in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district when the mishap occurred. Following the accident, Google expressed condolences and confirmed its cooperation with authorities. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families. We're working closely with the authorities and providing our support to investigate the issue,” the company said in a statement.

In a separate case, a group of tourists from Hyderabad drove into a swollen stream in Kerala while following directions from Google Maps. Officials said the road had been submerged due to heavy rainfall, and the tourists, unfamiliar with the area, mistook the flooded stretch for a drivable route. Fortunately, all four individuals escaped without injury.
