In a big announcement, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said he will resign as the state CM in two days and sought fresh mandate from the people. Addressing party workers, he stated that he won't occupy the chief minister's position until and unless he gets a fresh mandate from the people of Delhi.
In his first address to AAP workers since his release on bail in the Delhi excise policy case, Kejriwal on Sunday claimed the BJP wanted to break the party and form its government. He said they also wanted to destroy his morale but failed.
“Despite the court giving us bail, the case will continue. I spoke to my lawyers. Till the case does not end, I will not sit on the CMs seat. After two days, I am going to resign from the post of CM. I will not sit on the CM’s seat till the people elect me and send me to the seat again,” said Kejriwal addressing AAP workers.
On Saturday, Kejriwal reportedly held a meeting with senior AAP leaders to discuss the campaign plan for the upcoming Haryana elections.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said a member of the party will be named Chief Minister after his resignation. He said he would go among the people and ask for their support. Kejriwal also demanded that the elections in the national capital, scheduled for February, be held in November along with the polls in Maharashtra.
"Two days later, I will resign as Chief Minister. I will not sit on that chair till the people announce their verdict. Elections in Delhi are months away. I got justice from the legal court, now I will get justice from the people's court. I will sit on the Chief Minister's chair only after the order of the people," the AAP chief said.
Talking about why he didn't resign as the chief minister of Delhi while he was in the prison, the AAP supremo said: "They wanted to break the party, break Kejriwal's courage and morale... they have made a formula-- break parties, break MLAs, send leaders to jail. They thought they would form a government in Delhi by sending Kejriwal to jail...But they couldn't break our party... they couldn't even break away from the party workers."
