With concerns rising over LPG availability across parts of the country, two Indian-flagged carriers have successfully navigated the volatile Strait of Hormuz and are set to bolster domestic supplies.

A day after the tanker Shivalik reached Mundra Port carrying over 46,000 metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas, another vessel, Nanda Devi, was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday morning. The ship, carrying more than 47,000 metric tons of LPG, had already entered Indian waters and was expected to dock at Vadinar Port around 10 am.

The two vessels are among the few that have recently passed through the strategic Hormuz route amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, ensuring continuity in supplies at a time when demand pressures are visible on the ground.

On Saturday, Shipping Ministry Special Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sinha had indicated the expected arrival timelines of the two tankers and confirmed their safe passage through the region.

“All Indian seafarers in the Persian Gulf region are safe, and no untoward incidents involving them have been reported over the last 24 hours. There were 24 Indian-flagged vessels in the Persian Gulf, situated to the west of the Strait of Hormuz. Among these, two vessels, the Shivalik and the Nanda Devi, Indian-flagged vessels, both LPG carriers, safely transited the Strait of Hormuz late last night/early this morning and are now proceeding towards India,” Sinha said.

Officials said the cargo carried by Shivalik alone was significant enough to meet nearly a day’s LPG import requirement for the country. The shipment was estimated to be equivalent to around 32.4 lakh standard 14.2 kg domestic cylinders used in Indian households.

After Nanda Devi docks in Gujarat, about 24,000 metric tons of LPG from its cargo is expected to be transported to Tamil Nadu.

The arrival of the two shipments is likely to ease supply pressures that have led to long waiting lines in several cities. Small business owners, including those running eateries and street shops, have also been concerned about the situation impacting their operations.
