An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 hit Pakistan in the early hours of Sunday, shortly after another earthquake of 5.4 magnitude had hit the country on Saturday, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.

The National Centre for Seismology said that the earthquake in Pakistan took place at Indian Standard Time (IST) 00:40 and occured at a depth of 10 kilometres.

"EQ of M: 4.8, On: 03/08/2025 00:40:31 IST, Lat: 33.36 N, Long: 73.23 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Pakistan," NCS wrote.

Earlier on Saturday, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake had struck parts of Pakistan, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Islamabad, leaving residents in these areas in a state of panic, ARY News reported.

What makes Pakistan so susceptible to earthquakes?

According to several reports, Pakistan so happens to be one of the most seismically active countries in the world and happens to be the cross point for major faults, which makes it susceptible to earthquakes that occure quite frequently and are more destructive than in other places.

Provinces in Pakistan such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Sindh and Punjab lie on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate, making it a regular event for quakes to shake the areas.

Moreover, the location of certain regions makes them highly susceptible to earthquakes. This includes the high-risk areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan - due to their proximity to major fault lines like the Main Central Thrust. To add to it, Balochistan is also located near the active boundary between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making earthquakes a regular activity in the area.
