Salad days are meant to be happy days to make merry and party. But is your plus-one to parties your pimple? Does it pop up on your face right before your birthday or an important event? If acne is one problem that clings to you more closely than your friends, it's time to find a solution. Here are some practical tips on how to stop acne breakouts.

What causes acne

Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is a condition that primarily impacts teenagers and involves the sebaceous or oil glands of the skin. It can stem from multiple factors such as harmful chemicals found in certain cosmetics and a decrease in levels of an essential component called linoleic acid, which is naturally present in the oil secreted from our skin. This facilitates microorganisms to attack the dermis (skin) and trigger a vicious cycle. The resulting inflammation caused by these microbes leads to the development of acne.

This troublesome condition mainly manifests on the face, particularly on the forehead and cheeks. An eruption of acne in other areas could point to side-effects of specific medications.

Furthermore, various other factors can contribute to the development of acne. These include a family history of severe acne, prolonged use of oil-based cosmetics, and even receiving facial massages. Pimples can also be triggered by premenstrual syndrome and psychological stressors like anger and anxiety. In other cases, occupational acne may occur in individuals exposed to industrial chemicals such as chlorinated hydrocarbons. This type of eruption is commonly observed on the forearms or legs of middle-aged males.

Blackheads-whiteheads

Acne vulgaris can appear as different lesions, including blackheads (open comedones) and whiteheads (closed comedones). Blackheads are typically found on the skin's surface. At the same time, whiteheads can be more profound and only become visible when the skin is stretched. Owing to this condition, scars may be left behind, which can range from deep pits to more superficial marks.

Clean skin

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends gently washing the face up to twice daily and after heavy exercise or any other physical activity that results in excessive sweating. Using a non-abrasive cleanser with gentle application by fingertips is advised. Avoid washcloths or sponges on the face as they may irritate the dermis.

No alcohol

While you may be aware of the effects of alcohol intake, it is also essential to know that using alcohol-free products on the skin can prevent acne formation. If toners or exfoliants tend to cause itchiness or redness, they must be discontinued with immediate effect. Cosmetics may also cause the skin to dry up and worsen the breakout.

Tea Tree Oil

A natural home remedy for pimples, tea tree oil has been known to act against bacteria, viruses and fungi. It also elevates white blood cell levels, enhancing immunity and promoting faster healing. A drop of it must be applied to the affected area and can also be mixed with one's moisturiser if convenient.

Hair care

Oily hair tends to cause pimples on the forehead as the excess oil trickles to the head. Washing hair regularly can prevent the development of acne. Certain hair products that are either oil-based or contain harmful chemicals can aggravate the condition.

Keep your hands to yourself

If you're one of those who can't fight their intrusive thoughts and tend to pop pimples often, you may increase the healing period of acne, and make yourself susceptible to scares and dark spots, especially on your face.

A visit to the dermatologist is advised if acne breakouts pose a problem in daily life.
