Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians appointed Hardik Pandya as captain of the franchise for the upcoming season of the tournament.
The 30-year-old, who returned to the franchise from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash deal in November, replaces Rohit Sharma who was appointed as the skipper in 2013 and led the team to five title wins in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
The news of Pandya's appointment was announced on the team's Instagram handle on Friday.
"Mumbai Indians today announced a significant leadership transition for the upcoming 2024 season. Renowned all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to take the helm as the captain of the Mumbai Indians, succeeding its longest-serving, one of the most successful and loved captains the illustrious Rohit Sharma," the franchise wrote.
The franchise said that the decision was taken keeping in mind their philosophy whereby they always look to be future-ready.
"It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season," Global Head of Performance for Mumbai Indians Mahela Jayawardene said.
Pandya won four IPL titles in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 with the Mumbai Indians and moved to the Gujarat Titans in 2022, where he captained them to the title in their very first IPL season.
