The Maharashtra government has renamed the Bandra Sealink as the Mumbai and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) as the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Smruti Nhava Sheva Atal Setu on June 28.
The Veer Savarkar Setu is named after the late VD Savarkar as announced by Chief Minister Ekanth Shinde on Savarkar’s birth anniversary on May 28.
“The upcoming Bandra-Versova sea link will be named after Swatantryaveer Savarkar. On the lines of the Union government’s gallantry awards, the Maharashtra government will also set up Swatantryaveer Savarkar gallantry awards,” he said.
The 17.7-km-long Bandra-Versova sea link is Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation’s (MSRDC) under-construction project and it shall be completed by 2027.
The Veer Savarkar bridge will connect Andheri’s suburb Versova to the Bandra- Worli Sea Link located in Bandra. This coastal road project will help in reducing highway congestion on the Western Express Highway and the Western Line of the Mumbai suburban railway.
The bridge is expected to improve connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs while also directly connecting to the Navi Mumbai International Airport.
