Business Wire IndiaMr. Jo Johnson, UK Minister of State for Universities and Science and Mr. Dominic McAllister, UK Deputy High Commissioner for Bangalore, visited Stonehill International School on Thursday, December 10th.
Arriving directly from New Delhi, Mr. Johnson spent time interacting with the Diploma Programme (Grade 11 & 12) students. He began by saying that he was here with a large delegation of university representatives, with the express intention of conveying the message that the United Kingdom is very keen to have students from India pursue their higher education with them.
Mr. Johnson said that market surveys indicate that students have had a 92% satisfaction rate with higher education in the UK. When asked by Johannes, a D1 student, to expand on what exactly graduates were satisfied by, he explained that the quality and content of education in the UK is deemed to be much more satisfying than elsewhere in the world. Bhumika, a D2 student, asked what the chances of getting internships in the healthcare sector are as she plans to pursue a medical degree in the UK. Mr. Johnson replied that the country has a booming job market right now, especially with the healthcare industry, and that individuals with high skills will always be accepted with open arms. Margot, another D2 student, questioned if she would face any challenges in applying for the UK visa as she would still be 17 at the time of her graduation.
Both Mr. Johnson and Mr. McAllister verified that there were no stipulations by the government to deny visas as long as the university had confirmed admission. D1 student Harish, who plans to pursue a degree in architecture or design in the UK or USA, wanted to know what the terms of the government were to get employment visas after graduation. Mr. Johnson said that currently the government allows students a 4 month period to find graduate level employment which allows graduates to stay for 6 years; he also advised that while he might be biased in his opinion, the UK has fantastic design universities!
The session was a wonderful and informative experience for the students, and raised some challenges that students face for both visiting officials to ponder over.
