Ride hailing app Uber has unveiled an 'EV preference' feature at an event in London on October 8, allowing travellers to choose an electric vehicle for a ride, as well as an 'EV Mentor' programme to address concerns of drivers about green mobility.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced the sustainability feature and backed EVs to drive Uber's target of becoming a zero emission platform by 2040. "The growth of EVs has slowed down in major markets, but the number of EV sales continue to rise, and at Uber EVs are really taking off," Khosrowshahi said. "The reality is that we will only reach or zero emission goals if policymakers and other businesses do their part as well," Khosrowshahi added.
Uber also debuted an chatbot powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT which will answer all EV-related queries for drivers on the network. Uber also highlighted that its zero emission rides are now available across 32 countries in 200 cities.
"At Uber, we are electrifying everything from tuktuks in India, to e-bikes in Kenya, boats in Paris, e-mopeds in Taiwan, and even EV trucks on Uber Freights," said Khosrowshahi.
"Infact, in top EU cities, one in every 5 miles of road travel on happens in EVs, and in London it is one in three," he added. Khosrowshahi also backed the need for more affordable EVs and incentives for those who are driving them the most.
Announcing the green features amid an ongoing US Presidential election campaign, Dara Khosrowshahi said EVs have become a 'politically-charged issue' in these times. "Like many things, EVs have become a politically-charged issue, and how you vote often determines how you feel about EVs. But no matter your political beliefs, EVs are better."
