Trump's reciprocal tariff deadline nears. India's top 10 exports which could be in crosshairs

While officials from both nations negotiate a deal, the Commerce Ministry told the Lok Sabha about Centre’s plan to focus on market access among other things.

On February 13, India and US agreed on a new goal for bilateral trade – "Mission 500” – aiming to more than double total bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

As the April 2nd reciprocal tariff deadline near, buzz is growing around bilateral trade agreement between India and the US. While there have been several statements by SU President Donald Trump about softening his stance on the tit-for-tat levies, he has not once mentioned whether India will be exempted or not.

While officials from both nations negotiate a deal, the Commerce Ministry told the Lok Sabha about Centre’s plan to focus on market access among other things. In a written reply, Jitin Prasad, (MoS) Commerce and Industry, told Parliament that India is targeting on lowing the non-tariff barriers and import duty. While no reciprocal tariffs have been applied to India so far, several key exports may come in the firing line from next month. With New Delhi and Washington involved in frantic negotiations to resolve trade issues, here are top 10 things that India exports to the US:

  • Drug formulations, biologicals ($8 billion)
  • Pearl, precious, semiprecious stones pearl, precious, semi-precious stones ($6.57 billion);
  • Petroleum products ($5.83 billion)
  • Telecom instruments ($5.82 billion)
  • Gold and other precious metal jewellery ($3.3 billion)
  • Iron and steel products ($2.78 billion)
  • Ready-made garments of cotton including accessories ($2.74 billion)
  • Electronic components ($2.69 billion)
  • Cotton fabrics ($2.61 billion)
  • Marine products ($2.5 billion)

In another query regarding duties on agricultural products, Prasad said that according to the WTO 2023 pact, India's simple average tariff rate is 17 percent, with simple average agricultural tariff (which includes textiles) being 39 per cent and for industrial goods 13.5 per cent for 2023. After the Union Budget 2025-26, this simple average industrial tariff has been lowered to 10.66 per cent, the minister added.
