Tata Motors shares rose over 3 percent on Friday morning after its British luxury Jaguar Land Rover unit revealed its sales last month were best ever for May.

JLR sold 32,477 units last month, up 12 percent year-on-year.

"May sales were up for JLR in every major region with Asia Pacific up 41 percent, Europe up 16 percent, the China Region up 11percent, North America up 10 percent, the UK up 2 percent, and other overseas markets up 16 percent," the company said late on Thursday.

Jaguar sales rose 36 percent to 6,174 units, powered by strong demand for the XF (sales up 32 percent) and its derivatives like the AWD (all wheel drive) and Sportbrake, it said.

Land Rover sales in May, however, gained just 8 percent to 26,303 units. While Asia Pacific and Europe saw strong growth (up 42 percent and 15 percent respectively), North America sales grew just 3 percent and there was flat growth in Land Rover sales in China and UK.

Between Jan-May 2013, JLR sales are up 15 percent at 1.76 lakh units.

At 10:05hrs, Tata Motors was up 3.5 percent at Rs 292.95 on NSE.
