Siemens India on May 14 announced that the company plans to invest Rs 519 crore to expand its gas-insulated switchgear factory located in Goa and its metro train manufacturing facility in Aurangabad.

The company plans to increase the capacity of its gas-insulated switchgear factory by around 23 percent to manufacture around 22,000 feeders from its Ring Main Unit and 1,500 panels from its medium-voltage gas insulated switchgear manufacturing unit for an investment of Rs 333 crore.

The expansion is planned in phases over three years starting 2024-25 and will be funded through the internal accruals of the company, Siemens said in a press release.

The main function of a GIS substation is to switch, separate, transform, measure and distribute electrical energy in power systems.

The main feature of a GIS device is the use of SF6, an inert gas with exceptional insulation properties, and chemical and thermal stability.

Siemens will also setup a new greenfield Metro-car assembly set up for its Metro Rail systems segment. The facility will be setup by 2028 in a phased manner and will be initially used to manufacture export products. Siemens will spend Rs 186 crore to setup the facility which will be funded through the internal accruals of the company.

"Both factories will rank among leading globally benchmarked sustainable factories while also contributing to the Government of India’s Make in India and Aatmanirbhar programs through localization," Siemens said in a press release.

Overall Siemens has announced that it will spend Rs 1,000 crore over the next two years to expand four facilities in India including the two factories mentioned above and capacity expansions of the power transformer factory in Kalwa and vacuum interrupter factory in Goa announced in November 2023.
