Ratan Tata died at 86 in Mumbai.

The inner circle of the late business tycoon Ratan Tata was left surprised after his recently opened will mentioned a mystery man — Mohini Mohan Dutta — who has been bequeathed a third of former Tata Group chairman's residual assets, estimated at more than Rs 500 crore, The Economic Times reported. Dutta's unexpected inclusion has come as a surprise to the Tata family.

Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away in a Mumbai hospital on October 10. He was 86.

Dutta had been a long-standing associate and was known to Tata's close circles, including some family members, the report cited people who knew Tata closely as saying. Dutta, too, described himself as being close to Tata family members, sources from the conglomerate told the publication.

Who is Mohini Mohan Dutta ?

Dutta is an entrepreneur in the travel sector from Jamshedpur. He and his family used to own the travel agency Stallion. In 2013, it was merged with Taj Services, part of the Taj Group of Hotels. Dutta and his family held 80 percent stake in Stallion, and the remaining was owned by Tata Industries, the report said. One of Dutta’s daughters worked at Taj Hotels till 2015 and then started working at Tata Trusts until 2024.

Dutta was also invited to Tata's birth anniversary celebrations in December 2024.

First Meeting in Jamshedpur

At Ratan Tata's funeral in October, Dutta said they knew each other for 60 years. They first met in Jamshedpur at the Dealers’ Hostel when Ratan Tata was 24, he said. “He helped me out and really built me up,” the report quoted Dutta as saying.
