Starting August 1, 2025, the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has introduced a key change to its Universal Account Number (UAN) generation process, in an effort to expedite employee services. As of August 1, 2025, all new users will be required to undergo Aadhaar-based facial authentication.
Under the new rules, issued in a circular on July 30, the individuals will now be able to create and activate their UANs entirely online through UMANG app--making it easier for the individuals to skip approaching their employers--marking a major shift in the EPFO's approach to service delivery.
Aadhaar Face Scan Now Key to Access
Going forward, new UANs can only be generated through the UMANG app using Face Authentication Technology (FAT) linked to Aadhaar. Users no longer need to contact their employers for UAN creation.
However, the traditional employer-driven process will still apply in certain exceptional cases, including for international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.
