Linking your Permanent Account Number (PAN) with your Aadhaar card is mandatory for all Indian taxpayers. The process, initiated by the government to curb tax evasion and ensure accurate identity verification, is simple and can be completed online in a matter of minutes. Here's how you can do it.
Why linking PAN with Aadhaar is important The government has made Aadhaar-PAN linking compulsory to streamline tax filings and detect duplicate PANs
The Income Tax Department mandates the linkage of PAN with Aadhaar to avoid penalties and to validate the identity of PAN holders. If your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar, it may become inoperative, which can affect your ability to file income tax returns, make high-value transactions, or even open bank accounts.
Deadline and penalty for non-linking Missing the deadline could cost you ₹1,000 and may render your PAN inactive
As of now, the last deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar was June 30, 2023. If you missed it, you can still link your PAN, but only after paying a penalty of ₹1,000 as per Section 234H of the Income Tax Act. After payment, the PAN-Aadhaar linking can be done through the official website.
Step-by-step process to link PAN with Aadhaar online Follow these simple steps to link your documents via the income tax portal
1. Visit the official website: Go to https://incometax.gov.in
2. Click on 'Link Aadhaar': On the homepage, locate and click the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option under the ‘Quick Links’ section.
3. Enter your details: Provide your PAN, Aadhaar number, name as per Aadhaar, and mobile number. If you have only the year of birth in Aadhaar, check the relevant box.
4. Verify and submit: Check the box agreeing to validate Aadhaar data with UIDAI and click ‘Continue’.
5. Pay the penalty (if required): You’ll be redirected to the e-Pay Tax service where you must pay ₹1,000 via net banking, UPI, or debit card.
6. Complete the linking: After successful payment, return to the Aadhaar linking page and proceed with the linking request.
Check Aadhaar-PAN link status
Verify whether your Aadhaar is successfully linked to your PAN
After submission, you can track the status by going to the income tax portal and clicking on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ under the 'Quick Links'. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number to see the update.
Offline and SMS methods also available
If you prefer not to link online, you can opt for offline methods or send an SMS
You can also visit PAN service centres of NSDL or UTIITSL to complete the process offline. Alternatively, send an SMS in the following format to 567678 or 56161:
UIDPAN<12-digit Aadhaar><10-digit PAN>
Linking your PAN and Aadhaar is not just a legal requirement—it simplifies your tax filings and protects your financial identity. Don’t delay the process if you haven’t done it yet.
