What all travel insurance covers

The monsoon season brings with it lush landscapes, cooler weather and a refreshing change of pace. But it also brings unpredictability such as flight delays, cancellations, waterlogging and health risks. For travellers, this unpredictability can turn a dream vacation into a logistical and financial nightmare.

“The monsoon season, while offering unique travel experiences, also introduces a significant unpredictability. Heavy rainfall, fog, and flooding can lead to widespread travel disruptions, including flight delays and cancellations. This was recently evident in Mumbai where over 250 flights were disrupted in a 24-hour period due to heavy rain,” said Vivek Chaturvedi, CMO & Head of Direct Sales, Digit General Insurance.

In such scenarios, a comprehensive travel insurance policy is not merely a convenience but a financial safeguard against the risks that come with travel during this period.

A good travel insurance plan covers a range of monsoon-related disruptions. For instance, in the case of flight delays, policies reimburse extra expenses such as meals or refreshments during long airport waits.

If heavy rainfall or flooding leads to trip cancellations recognised by authorities, insurers can compensate for non-refundable bookings such as hotels, flights, or tour packages, protecting travellers from substantial financial losses.

Sometimes, airlines themselves cancel flights due to adverse weather. Here, the operator-initiated cancellation clause ensures passengers receive fixed compensation over and above what airlines provide, helping them manage incidental costs or fare differences.

Monsoon chaos can also trigger missed connections, especially for multi-leg journeys. Insurance in such cases covers alternate travel, stay, and meals during unscheduled layovers. And it’s not just about flights, travel insurance also covers emergency accidental treatment and evacuation in case of accidents caused by landslides or storms. In remote locations, where healthcare may be limited, this becomes a lifeline.

Finally, in the unfortunate event of a personal accident leading to death or permanent disability, policies provide lump-sum compensation to nominees ensuring the family’s financial security.

Coverage details can vary, depending on the insurer and plan. Travellers should always read their policy document carefully. For instance, insurers define departure time differently. Some count it from when the aircraft releases its parking brakes and leaves the bay, while others calculate it from when the plane takes off or exits the airport. Similarly, an insurance claim may be denied if the delay or cancellation of flight is communicated to the passenger at least six hours before the departure time.

For those planning trips during the rains, investing in comprehensive travel insurance isn’t just a precaution. It’s peace of mind. With the right cover, monsoon disruptions may inconvenience your plans, but they won’t derail your finances.
