Let the walls do all the talking as far as home décor is concerned. Textured walls do the perfect job of depicting your personality, but they might just end up burning a hole in your pocket. Calling in a professional to re-texture the walls can be expensive, so why not take do this task yourself and re-texture the walls with things around the house. Whisk brooms, sponges and combs can work wonders, and worry not, no one will be able to differentiate whether it was done by you or a professional!
Whisk Broom
If you desire a look and feel of cloth, then the whisk broom is the right tool for you. Before you actually start to get your hands dirty, you need to ensure you wall’s surface has been coated with a drywall compound. It will help in creating a canvas where textures stand out well, so ensure your walls are coated.
Now getting to the technique- all you need to do is place the whisk broom and gradually glide in vertically from top to bottom. Continue to do this until you have covered the entire surface of the wall- once done, you will see a cloth like texture, the one that resembles linen and viola your textured wall is ready
Hair comb
While the compound is still wet, drag a thick hair comb vertically from the top to create straight lines. If you want curvy lines, move your comb in an ‘S’ shape ensuring the lines overlap each other.
Paint brush
If you are a huge fan of swirls, then a small paint brush is the right tool for you. All you need to do is simply turn the brush around in a small circle without letting go of the brush. This technique will be able to help you create circles. Before you draw another circle right beside it, clean the brush again. Ensure the circles touch each other.
Window Squeegee
To create vertical wall beading, create many slits on a window cleaner and run the squeegee in a straight line. Make the slits depending on the spacing you want between the lines.
Remember, have a steady hand and run the squeegee from top to bottom in a single stroke. Move back and forth if you want to create squiggly lines. You could also create a woven look by running the cleaner vertically and then dragging it horizontally to create small boxes.
Sponge
The sponge is cited to be the easiest tool of the lot. It not only creates a wonderful texture but is also very easy to use. Dab the porous side of the sponge on the wall and keep dabbing it until the pores leave a print on the wall. The same textured can be achieved by using an old rag.
