New twist in Sona Comstar saga, now Rani Kapur seeks UK probe into son Sunjay Kapur's death

Complicating matters further, it has emerged that Sunjay Kapur was a US national—prompting American authorities to begin monitoring the case.

The internal strife within the influential Sona Comstar family has taken a serious international turn following the mysterious death of Sunjay Kapur. His mother, Rani Kapur—former Chairperson and co-founder of the company—has approached UK authorities, demanding a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her son’s death in London.

According to sources who spoke to ANI, an official criminal complaint has been lodged in the UK by Rani Kapur, raising questions about what she terms “mysterious circumstances” around Sunjay’s demise. She is urging British law enforcement to intervene without delay.

“The developments surrounding Sunjay's death are deeply concerning,” a source close to the family told ANI, adding that urgent action has been requested from UK authorities.

Complicating matters further, it has emerged that Sunjay Kapur was a US national—prompting American authorities to begin monitoring the case, ANI has confirmed.

In her first public appearance since the tragedy, Rani Kapur gave an emotional video interview to ANI, breaking her silence and revealing the depth of her grief and concerns. “I still don’t know what happened to my son,” she said, visibly shaken. “I’m old now. I need closure before I go.”

Reflecting on the company’s origins, she recalled the early days of Sona Comstar. “I remember the early days of Sona—built with care, sacrifice, and love,” she said, underscoring her emotional and historical ties to the firm. Her comments appear to challenge Sona Comstar’s assertion that she has had no involvement with the company since 2019.

While the company maintains that Rani Kapur has neither direct nor indirect involvement in its affairs since that year, she offered a contrasting view. “I am here to remind the world that our family’s legacy must not be lost. It must be passed on, as my husband always wanted it to be,” she said to ANI.

Due to her advanced age and deteriorating health, Rani Kapur indicated that she would not make further public statements. “My legal team will address everything necessary,” she noted, suggesting that the matter will now unfold through formal legal processes.

The dispute further intensified after Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd, the listed entity of the group, issued a regulatory filing on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), rejecting Rani Kapur’s claims. The company labelled her statements as “baseless” and “legally untenable,” reiterating that she holds no position or authority within the organization.

ANI also reported that prior to her public remarks, Rani Kapur had written a letter to the board, alleging she was pressured into signing documents behind locked doors shortly after her son’s passing—an incident she described as “highly suspicious.” She also claimed she was denied access to her bank accounts and left financially dependent on a few individuals. According to her, no one was authorized to represent the Kapur family on the company’s board. Despite her appeal to postpone the Annual General Meeting, the company went ahead with it.

In response, Sona Comstar issued a legal notice to Rani Kapur, warning her against circulating what it described as “false and damaging information.” The notice, accessed by ANI, strongly denied her claims of coercion and mismanagement, calling them “malafide, false, unwarranted, and uncorroborated.”
