Jio, Airtel in focus after TRAI's June subscriber growth, Voda Idea loses users

Telecom shares are in focus as Reliance Jio leads the June subscriber growth, Bharti Airtel grows modestly while Vodafone Idea continues to lose users in June.

Jio led the broadband segment in June with a total customer base of 48.89 crore subscribers. It was followed by Bharti Airtel with 28.13 crore subscribers and VIL 12.78 crore subscribers.

Telecom shares are in focus on August 21, a day after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released subscriber data for the month of June.

The telecom arm of Reliance Industries (RIL) - Reliance Jio - added about 19.1 lakh wireless subscribers in June, while Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel saw modest subscriber growth at 12.5 lakh, government data showed. Vodafone Idea continues to lose subscribers, as 8.61 lakh users ported out of the network in June. Read more details here.

The addition of new subscribers has brought the total number of Jio mobile users to about 476 million and Airtel to 389 million for June. The June loss for Vodafone has brought down its total mobile users to 217 million.

In the wireline segment, Reliance Jio led again by adding 4.34 lakh new subscribers. Airtel followed it, which added 44,611 new subscribers, and Vodafone Idea with 21,042 additions.

Bharti Airtel led the machine-to-machine segment with 2.82 crore connections, followed by Vodafone Idea with 1.45 crore connections and Jio with 67.2 lakh subscribers. The total broadband subscribers base in India rose to 94 crore in June, from 93.51 crore in May.

Reliance Jio led the broadband segment with a total customer base of 48.89 crore subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel with 28.13 crore subscribers and VIL 12.78 crore subscribers.

On August 20, Bharti Airtel shares ended nearly 1.5 percent lower at Rs 1,449 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), while Vodafone closed marginally lower at Rs 15.94. Jio's parent RIL settled slightly higher at Rs 2,986.50 on NSE.
