First Tick: Top 10 global cues for today’s trade

The GIFT Nifty is indicating a positive start for the day.

The two Indian benchmarks ended the holiday-truncated week on a high note on August 16, as investors rejoiced easing fears of a US recession.

At close, the Sensex was up 1,330.96 points or 1.68 percent at 80,436.84, and the Nifty was up 397.40 points or 1.65 percent at 24,541.20.

GIFT Nifty (Gains)

The GIFT Nifty is trading higher, indicating a positive start for the day. Nifty futures were trading at 24,711.50 at 06:50 am IST.

Asian Equities (Down)

Asian stocks were taking a breather on Monday after global equities enjoyed their best week in nine months on expectations the US economy would dodge a recession and cooling inflation would kick off a cycle of interest rate cuts.

US Equities (Gain)

US stocks ended higher on Friday, extending their biggest weekly percentage gains of the year as worries of an economic downturn eased and investors focused on the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium next week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 96.7 points, or 0.24%, to 40,659.76. The S&P 500 gained 11.03 points, or 0.20%, at 5,554.25 and the Nasdaq Composite added 37.22 points, or 0.21%, at 17,631.72.

US Bond Yield (Gains)

The US 10-year Treasury yield rose 20 bps at 3.89 percent, while the US 2-year bond yield rose 36 bps at 4.06 percent.

The US dollar was struggling to make headway against its peers on Monday, though it traded in a tight range as investors awaited fresh catalysts this week that could offer clues on the outlook for U.S. interest rates.

Asian currencies (Gain)

Asian currencies were trading mostly higher against the US dollar on Monday with Malaysian Ringgit gained 1 percent. However, on year to date basis except Malaysian Ringgit and Singapore Dollar, all other currencies were trading in the red.
