BSE, NSE Holiday today on November 5: The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) are closed today in observance of Guru Nanak Jayanti, as per the exchanges' official holiday calendar. Trading across all segments-including equity, derivatives, securities lending and borrowing, and currency derivatives-will remain suspended for the entire day.
Both exchanges operate from Monday to Friday and remain closed on weekends and designated holidays. Regular trading activity will resume on the next working day, Wednesday, November 6. The holiday marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the revered founder of Sikhism.
Similarly, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) has also announced a trading break in the morning session (9:00 am to 5:00 pm) on November 5, with operations resuming during the evening session from 5:00 pm to 11:30/11:55 pm.
Banks in multiple cities are also observing a holiday today for Guru Nanak Dev Ji Jayanti, as listed in the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) official holiday schedule.
What Is Prakash Utsav?
Commonly known as Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav, the festival is celebrated with prayers, processions, and community service to honour Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who was born in 1469 at Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi-now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. The 2025 celebration marks his 556th birth anniversary.
Following today's closure, the only remaining stock market holiday in 2025 will be on December 25, for Christmas, with both major exchanges remaining shut on weekends as usual.
