India clocked its highest-ever coal production in a year during FY24 at 997.828 million tonne, allaying any concerns of shortage of coal, Minister of Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy informed Lok Sabha on July 31.
The domestic coal production for FY24 was 11.71 percent higher than what was recorded in FY23. Government has been focusing on increasing domestic production of coal and cut down on its non-essential import.
During the first quarter of FY25, provisional figures show India produced 247.396 MT of coal as compared to 223.376 MT during the same period last year, recording a growth of about 10.75%.
What Helped Boost The Output
A Single Window Clearance portal for the coal sector had been set up to speed up the operationalization of coal mines, which also helped in boosting the annual output.
The captive coal mines were also encouraged to sell up to 50% of their annual production in the open market, after meeting requirement of the power plants linked with the mine.
The terms of commercial coal mining too have been liberalised, Coal Ministry said, with no restriction on utilization of coal, which has allowed new companies to participate in the bidding process.
World's largest miner - Coal India - adopted better technology wherever feasible, which led to better output, the ministry informed Lok Sabha.
Aside of that, an Import Data System has been developed by the Coal Ministry to track imports and take measures to ensure more domestic supplies of coal.
