US President Donald Trump on Monday issued a sharp warning on his social media platform Truth Social, declaring that any country aligning itself with what he called the “Anti-American policies of BRICS” will face an additional 10% tariff—with no exceptions.
“Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote in a post, signaling a tougher stance on nations seen as drifting toward the influence of the BRICS bloc.
Trump's statement comes as the BRICS nations hold their annual summit in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro. Some of the biggest emerging economies are in attendance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently attending the summit. In his speech on Sunday, he targeted the growing menace of global terrorism and called for unity in fighting the threat. Citing the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilian lives, PM Modi called it a "brutal and cowardly" assault on India's "soul, identity, and dignity." He asserted that the attack was not just against India, but against humanity as a whole.
The only exception this year is Chinese President Xi Jinping. This is the first time since coming to power that Xi Jinping has missed the summit. Beijing has not offered any official reason for Xi's absence. Chinese Premier Li Qiang is attending the summit in his place.
Meanwhile, BRICS nations have also voiced “serious concerns about the rise of unilateral tariff” measures. The bloc of major emerging economy said the tariffs have the potential of hurting the global economy.
What is BRICS?BRICS—originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—is set to discuss strategies for deepening cooperation amid what its members describe as growing concerns over Western dominance. Since 2024, the group has expanded to include Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran.
