Construction and engineering major Larsen & Toubro Ltd has announced that the firm's whole-time director and president Subramanian Sarma, who heads the firm's large energy vertical, has been elevated to the role of deputy managing director, with effect from April 2. Sarma has been a member of L&T's board since 2015.
The company said in a statement that it has also extended Sarma's term on the board till February 2028, subject to shareholders' approval at its upcoming annual general meeting.
"Mr. Sarma has been instrumental in transforming our hydrocarbon and energy businesses, driving innovation, operational excellence, and global competitiveness. His elevation is well deserved, and I am confident that his leadership will further strengthen L&T’s growth trajectory," said SN Subrahmanyan, L&T's chairman and managing director, in a statement.
Sarma, a veteran in the energy business in the West Asian countries, especially in hydrocarbons, established L&T as a key player in the West Asia's large energy industry for engineering contracts, which was earlier dominated by large North American and European players.
Under his leadership, the energy business of L&T, the second biggest vertical in the company after infrastructure, has worked with oil and gas parastatals and other oil majors in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, most notably with Saudi state-owned explorer and refiner Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil and gas company by revenue.
Last year, L&T secured $4 billion in orders from Saudi Aramco for oil exploration and refining projects. In February, L&T's energy business secured another contract from Saudi Aramco, a $1.5 billion-deal for a carbon capture and storage project.
"I am honoured to take on this new role at a time when L&T is witnessing strong
growth and expansion. I thank the CMD & L&T’s Board Members for their continued trust. I look forward to contributing to the company’s long-term vision and creating sustainable value for stakeholders," Sarma said in a statement.
