Feminine and Infant Hygiene Association of India (FIHA), has sought waiver of the 10 per cent excise duty on sanitary napkins in the Budget 2011-12, reports The Economic Times. Currently, sanitary napkins attract 10 per cent excise duty, and barring a few states, an additional VAT which varies from state to state and can be as high as 12.5 per cent in some cases.

The duty was increased to 10 per cent from zero per cent in Budget 2010-11. The zero per cent duty helped in preventing menstrual health issues that impact health, hygiene, productivity and school attendance of girls and women in India, FIHA said in a statement, the report adds.
