Around 16% international scholars in US are from India

While Indians constitute 15.7 percent (16,068) of total scholars, Chinese have a 19.1 percent (19,556) share among international scholars, according to the latest Open Doors Report data

India and China remain the leading places of origin for international scholars in the US, accounting for 35 percent of total students in 2022-23, the latest Open Doors Report has said.

There were 1,02,366 international scholars in the US in 2022-23, a 12.6 percent increase from the previous year. While Indians constituted 15.7 percent (16,068) of the total scholars, China had a 19.1 percent (19,556) share.

India recorded an 8.2 percent jump from 2021-22, while for the Chinese students the growth was a minuscule 0.9 percent.

Spain, Japan, and France were among the countries with the lowest number of international scholars in the US.

As many as 76 percent of scholars are involved in research followed by teaching (9 percent), research & teaching (7 percent), clinical (4 percent) and other activities (4 percent).

In terms of specialisation, science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) has the most number of students, with 78 percent of them pursuing various fields including agriculture (5 percent), engineering (15 percent) and math and computer Science (6 percent. Physical and life science had around 40 percent of students, the largest in the STEM category and overall fields.

The lowest enrollment was in communication and journalism (0.7 percent), education (1.5 percent) and humanities (2.5 percent).

Harvard University holds the largest share of students at 4,478, followed by Stanford University (3,314), Columbia University (2,925), Yale University (2,587), and University of California - Los Angeles (2,348).

The data is released by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education (IIE).
