Adani Defence & Aerospace has signed a binding collaboration agreement with Sparton (DeLeon Springs LLC), a group company of Elbit Systems and a global leader in advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems, the company announced on May 18.
According to a statement quoted by ANI, the partnership marks a major step in localising the assembly of complex electronic systems and cutting-edge ASW solutions for both Indian and global markets.
With this collaboration, Adani Defence becomes the first private Indian firm to offer indigenised sonobuoy solutions—mission-critical platforms used to detect, locate, and track submarines and underwater threats, thereby enhancing Undersea Domain Awareness (UDA).
“Through this partnership with Sparton, Adani Defence & Aerospace becomes the first private company in India to offer indigenised sonobuoy solutions, enabling access to advanced technologies while fostering a future-ready, self-reliant defence ecosystem,” said Jeet Adani, Vice President of Adani Enterprises. “This initiative reflects our Group's vision of empowering India's armed forces with world-class capabilities that are designed, developed, and delivered in India, for India and the world.”
Sonobuoys play a crucial role in anti-submarine warfare and naval security operations, supporting the protection of carrier strike groups and other maritime assets. Until now, India has largely relied on imports for these vital systems.
“This partnership to bring world-class sonobuoy technology and integrating it with India’s defence ecosystem is a step towards building self-reliant capabilities in this critical domain,” said Ashish Rajvanshi, CEO of Adani Defence & Aerospace.
Aligned with the Indian government’s 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' initiatives, the partnership is expected to reduce dependency on foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and strengthen India’s defence manufacturing capabilities.
“In an increasingly volatile maritime environment, strengthening India's undersea warfare capabilities is not merely a strategic priority but an imperative for safeguarding sovereignty and national interests,” Jeet Adani added. “The Indian Navy requires integrated, mission-ready ISR and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, including critical systems like sonobuoys, that are indigenously developed, swiftly deployable, and globally competitive.”
Sparton, which has a long-standing relationship with the Indian Navy, will work with Adani to localise manufacturing, enhance high-tech skills, and tailor its proven ASW technologies for India’s naval requirements.
“Sparton has a long legacy for problem solving, advanced engineering and manufacturing of America's best maritime defense solutions,” said Donnelly Bohan, President and CEO, Sparton DeLeon Springs LLC. “We are proud to partner with Adani Defence & Aerospace to bring our proven anti-submarine warfare (ASW) technologies to India. This partnership will enable us to localise assemblage, create high-technology skill sets, and deliver reliable ASW solutions tailored to the India Navy's needs.”
The collaboration is expected to boost India’s indigenous defence capabilities and support the development of a robust and self-reliant maritime security framework.
