This year’s MET Gala blue carpet served more than just high fashion by shining the spotlight on baby mamas in high couture. Among the many head-turning moments at the 2025 edition of fashion’s most elite soirée, it was two radiant mothers-to-be — Bollywood actor Kiara Advani and global popstar Rihanna — who captured hearts and headlines in their custom designer outfits.

Kiara Advani’s MET debut:

In a moment that fused art, diversity, and motherhood, Kiara Advani made her long-awaited MET Gala debut in a sculptural creation by Indian couturier Gaurav Gupta. Styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, the look titled ‘Bravehearts’ was far from a traditional red carpet appearance. The outfit was a fitting tribute to André Leon Talley and his legacy at Vogue and Black fashion history.

With her baby bump elegantly encased in a heart-shaped breastplate and the dramatic sweep of a cape behind her, Kiara embodied this year’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, with grace and symbolism. The ensemble drew inspiration from the codes of Black dandyism and sent out a powerful statement from the designer’s atelier.

According to the press statement from the designer’s team, Kiara expressed her excitement for this collaboration and mentioned, “Making my Met Gala debut at this point in my life, as both an artist and mother-to-be feels incredibly special. When my stylist, Anaita Shroff Adajania , approached Gaurav to design my look, he created 'Bravehearts', a vision that honours the transformative phase I’m stepping into connecting it beautifully to this year’s dress code ‘Tailored for you.’ Inspired by the legacy of André Leon Talley we reflected on what it means to show up with intention, individuality and strength.”

Rihanna: The mother of MET

If there’s one thing the world has learned, it’s that Rihanna never arrives quietly, especially not when she’s expecting. The Barbadian icon, notorious for her late but legendary appearances, made her grand entrance hours after most guests had scaled the steps. But she made every minute of the wait worth it.

This year, Rihanna emerged on the blue carpet in a custom ensemble by Marc Jacobs that was anything but subtle. Her third pregnancy with A$AP Rocky, who is a co-chair for the event  this year, was revealed in spectacular style. She chose to arrive fashionably late in a pinstriped suit jacket re-imagined as a skirt, cinched around her waist; a cropped jacket layered over a corset that curved delicately over her bump; a polka-dot necktie; and a dramatic wide-brimmed hat.

It was quintessential Rihanna outfit with notes of playful, bold, and high design details. Her current look was compared to her previous maternity moment at the MET Gala when she surpised her fans in a voluminous white floral jacket and a custom white dress in 2023 to show off her baby bump while pregnant with A$AP Rocky’s second child.

Maternity at the MET:

The MET Gala has long been more than a fashion spectacle and celebrities have used it as a platform to make personal revelations through high-fashion. In 2018, Cardi B stunned in a jewel-encrusted Moschino gown by Jeremy Scott, her baby bump cocooned in opulence. The gown, equal parts avant-garde and maternal, came with an extravagant headpiece that made it one of the night’s most talked-about looks.

Go further back, and Kim Kardashian’s floral Givenchy gown at the 2013 MET Gala remains etched in public memory. Designed by Riccardo Tisci and worn while pregnant with her first child, North West, the ensemble sparked conversation, admiration, and eventually, a rethinking of what maternity dressing could look like on one of fashion’s biggest nights.

What makes these maternity moments significant is the way each woman has owned her narrative with powerful sartorial statements in their transformative phase with confidence and grace. Whether it's Kiara’s sculptural homage to heritage or Rihanna’s subversive tailoring twist, the mothers have arrived in style at MET to rewrite the fashion rules.
