Aloe vera has been a trusted ingredient in skincare for generations, known for its ability to soothe, hydrate, and heal. But there’s a new variety gaining attention; Red Aloe vera. It is said to offer benefits just like the traditional aloe vera, making it a valuable addition to personal care routines.
While green aloe vera is a household name in skincare, the red aloe vera is now entering the skincare market. Known for its deep red colour, this variety is rich in nutrients that support skin health. The green aloe is celebrated for its hydration and soothing properties, and red aloe vera brings added antioxidants and vitamins, making it a versatile option for skincare. However, research specifically focusing on red aloe vera is limited.

Red aloe vera gets its colour from anthocyanins, the powerful antioxidants, says Dr Jushya Bhatia Sarin, a dermatologist. She adds that these compounds help protect the skin from damage caused by pollution, stress, and ageing. “Red Aloe is a powerful blend of antioxidants and hydrating elements that is particularly beneficial for those looking to rev up their skincare. The rich red hue signifies high anthocyanin content, which not only protects but deeply soothes, making it ideal for daily use in personal care products," she says.
Dr Sarin shares some health benefits of Red Aloe vera:
Rich in antioxidants: Anthocyanins help protect the skin from free radical damage and slow signs of aging. Use a red aloe face serum to reduce the effects of environmental stress.
Deep hydration: Polysaccharides and amino acids help the skin retain moisture, preventing dryness. A red aloe-infused body cream can help keep skin soft and supple.
Nourishes with vitamins: Vitamins A, C, and E promote brighter, firmer skin and support natural repair processes. A red aloe-based moisturiser can enhance your skin’s natural glow.
