Ice cubes have come to be commonly used for their numerous beauty benefits, like reduced puffiness, rejuvenating skin, and giving a natural glow. However, they are not for everyone. Dr Aanchal Panth, a popular dermatologist, debunked some of the myths attached to their usage and shared her views on how and when to use ice cubes, especially those fused with a variety of ingredients.

But first, here are some of the benefits associated with ‘skin icing’ or ‘cold therapy’:

Reduces Inflammation: Considered therapeutic when used for controlling inflammation or swelling on any area of the body, especially under the eyes.

Has a Tightening Effect: Not only shrinks the pores, but also gives the temporary effect of tightening the muscles.

Soothes Sunburns and Cuts: Applying ice cubes can provide relief to sunburns and cuts. They can help subside redness and ease pain.

Provides Natural Glow: Icing can lead to a sudden rush of blood flow, which is responsible for the flushed look you get.

In her video, Dr Aanchal Panth clarified some of the myths and shared the proper way to use ice cubes. She said:

  • Avoid direct contact of ice with skin. Instead, wrap the cubes in a handkerchief or a towel, then use them.
  • While ice cubes may help control inflammation and reduce oiliness, their effects are only temporary.
  • Those with skin issues like dryness, skin irritation, sensitivity, or rosacea shouldn’t use ice, as it would cause further damage.
  • Proper hydration is key. Wash and moisturise your face before using ice cubes, and moisturise again once you are done.

Dr Aanchal in her video also highlights that ice is not a miracle solution but merely a temporary aid for the skin. She says, "Ice is a tool — not a miracle. Use it mindfully, and don’t skip your skincare essentials!"

She also warns that while it works for many, rubbing ice on face may not be beneficial for everyone. For individuals with sensitive skin, rosacea, or broken capillaries, it may worsen redness, cause flare-ups, or harm delicate skin. Overusing ice or applying it directly can even lead to frostbite-like damage and disrupt the skin barrier, she added.

How Often Should You Do It?

While it can be done daily if your skin adapts to it, otherwise restrict it to 2 or 3 times a week. Overusing may cause skin problems like redness and irritation. Many celebs use it in the morning or before applying makeup for a smoother application.
