While she may stay away from the limelight for most of the year, Aishwarya Rai’s appearance at Cannes is eagerly anticipated by everyone who’s ever heard of her. A Cannes veteran, she made a head-turning entry this time, ditching a gown for an Indian saree.
The actress wore a stunning Manish Malhotra creation — a classic ivory Banarasi saree with a handwoven tissue drape. She exuded ethereal grace in the charming ensemble, beautified with a delicate border and brocade motifs.
She embraced a maximalist aesthetic with élan, pairing the look with opulent 500 carats of Mozambique rubies and uncut diamonds in 18K gold and a ruby statement ring. Her centre-parted hair was straightened to perfection, and her lipstick matched the hue of the rubies. However, it was the sindoor that stole the spotlight.
Manish Malhotra shared her pictures and wrote: “The OG Indian Queen of Cannes @aishwaryaraibachchan_arb embraces Classic White Handloom in a handwoven kadwa ivory Banarasi saree with a handwoven tissue drape and imperial heirloom of rubies from @manishmalhotrajewellery.”
It wasn’t just Aishwarya’s sindoor-clad look that drew attention — Aditi Rao Hydari also stood out. She wore a gorgeous red saree by Raw Mango that draped elegantly around her figure.
The brand detailed the look on Instagram, sharing: “Aditi Rao Hydari @aditiraohydari at Cannes, on the French Riviera, wearing the Sultanah red sari. Not quite silk — the Mashru sari is known for its sumptuous tactility and outward lustre. The border features a tactile weave pattern known as 'ilayacha', derived from elaichi (cardamom), referencing its scale. A blue selvedge edges the opposite side.”
Multi-hued jewellery — including a choker, earrings, and rings — added vibrant contrast to the ensemble, while the bindi and sindoor stole the spotlight at the international festival, lending just the right touch of tradition.
