Beware of fake friends: 10 clues your best friend might be a wolf in disguise

A good friendship always lifts you up, and never drains you. But sometimes, the people we trust most might not have our back. We all love to have friends. But in the world of instant connections, it’s not easy to find a friend who will root for you at all times and will be by your side in every situation. True friends cheer you on, listen without judgement, and are happy to see you thrive. On the other hand, fake friends thrive when you stumble, they compete instead of celebrate, and sometimes, they’re only around when it suits them.

It might be painful, but spotting a fake best friend early can save you from unnecessary stress, betrayal, and disappointment. These aren’t just minor irritations, they’re warning signs that the person by your side isn’t as loyal as you think. From little jealous digs to outright manipulation, a fake friend can leave you questioning yourself and your worth.

Here are 10 red flags your best friend isn’t really your friend

1. A friend in need: They come to you only when they need something, such friends are selfish. Genuine friends check in regularly; fake friends are transactional.

2. They gossip about you behind your back: A friend who doesn’t stand up for you in your absence isn’t a good friend. Also, If they share your secrets with others, they can’t be trusted with your trust.

3. They compete, not celebrate: Most true friends mirror each other’s happiness. But for fake friends your  successes become their insecurity. Remember, a true mate is proud, not envious.

4. They disappear when you need them: Friends who are unavailable when you need them, cannot be trusted. Crisis reveals character. A real friend sticks around.

5. They belittle your achievements: A best friend will be ecstatic when you achieve something. If your ‘so-called’ best friend is always mocking, minimising, or dismissing your wins, it’s is a classic red flag.

6. They manipulate or guilt-trip: If everything feels like a favour owed, they’re playing games, not supporting you.

7. They make everything about themselves: A good friend is also a good listener. Conversations should be mutual; one-sided friendship is draining.
