World Kidney Day 2026: Can high-protein diets harm your kidneys? Top nephrologist explains

Protein-rich diets have gained popularity for muscle gaining and weight loss, but their effect on kidney health often remains questionable. Although normal kidneys can typically manage higher protein intake, this may burden impaired kidneys with excessive quantities.

  • High protein intake strains kidneys if they are unhealthy
  • Recommended lean proteins: chicken, fish, beans
  • Consult a nephrologist if unsure about kidney health

It is often believed that eating a lot of protein is harmful to the kidneys, but this is mainly true if your kidneys are already unhealthy. If your kidneys are not functioning well, a high protein intake can indeed worsen their condition. To protect your kidneys, make sure to drink plenty of water, consume lean protein sources like chicken, fish, and beans, and if you're unsure about your kidney health, consult a nephrologist for recommended tests.

The kidneys' primary job is to filter out waste products from protein metabolism. The more protein you consume, the harder your kidneys have to work to filter out these waste products, putting extra strain on them. Initially, high protein intake became popular for weight gain, muscle growth, and nutritional value, but its negative impact on kidney health was later observed.

Dr Abhijeet Kumar, Associate Director of Nephrology & Renal Transplant Medicine at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Lucknow, tells Moneycontrol that when you consume protein, it breaks down into amino acids, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream. As the kidneys filter these amino acids and other waste products from the blood, their primary function is filtering. High protein intake increases the workload on the kidneys and raises blood pressure in the kidney, which can be problematic if the kidneys are not healthy.

For people with kidney disease, monitoring protein intake is crucial. Generally, the following protein intake recommendations apply (though they can vary from person to person)

Early stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD 1-3): 0.8-1g per kg body weight.

Advanced stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD 4-5): 0.6-0.8g per kg body weight.

For dialysis patients: 1-1.2g per kg body weight to compensate for protein loss during dialysis.

Health risks of excess protein

The impact of protein intake on kidney health includes:

Phosphorus load: Animal-based proteinsare higher in phosphorus, which can be problematic for kidney patients.

Acid load: High animal protein intake can lead to acid production.
