Reset, refuel, rejuvenate: 7 health benefits of taking a break from work, daily routine

Rest is important for your body, mind, and soul. Your body needs rest to function better, your mind needs it to calm itself, and your soul needs it to gain peace. Rest means putting yourself first and allowing yourself to relax, rejuvenate, and greet each day with more energy.

How to reduce stress: Taking time off, even if it’s for a short walk, an afternoon nap, or a few days away, gives your mind and body a chance to reset

Life gets busy, really busy. Between work, family, social commitments, and everything in between, it’s easy to put yourself last. But here’s the truth: taking a break isn’t selfish; it’s necessary.

Rest isn’t just about doing nothing, it’s about recharging, resetting, and coming back rejuvenated, says Gauri Ahire Chavan, Director, Grape County. “It is important to go on a weekend getaway, or enjoy a slow morning with coffee, or not take up extra obligations. Some days a break is all you need to figure out what you actually want, and what makes you happier," she adds.

Chavan shares a few reasons why making time for yourself should be non-negotiable:
  • Burnout is real: You know that exhausted, running-on-empty feeling? That’s burnout knocking. Stress piles up, and before you know it, you’re all tired and fatigued. Taking time off, even if it’s for a short walk, an afternoon nap, or a few days away, gives your mind and body a chance to reset. Multiple studies support the idea that time away from stress helps lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and improves mental clarity.

  • Breaks make you more creative: Ever noticed how your best ideas come when you’re in the shower or out on a walk? That’s because your brain needs space to wander. “Stepping away from the daily grind, journaling, painting, daydreaming, or even just sitting in silence, can help unlock fresh ideas and new perspectives,” says Chavan.
  • Find yourself: When was the last time you truly felt at ease? Not rushing, not planning the next thing, just fully present? “Taking time for yourself helps you reconnect with what makes you feel good,. Take up a hobby, read a book, go gardening, dance in your kitchen, or simply do nothing without guilt. These activities calm your mind and help you focus,” Chavan says.
  • Your body needs rest: You may shoo away the idea of resting, telling yourself that you have a lot to do. But remember when you skip rest you invite health issues. “Lack of downtime can lead to sleep problems, high blood pressure, and a weaker immune system. Taking time off isn’t laziness; it’s self-preservation. A slow morning, a long bath, or a day with zero plans can do wonders for your health,” she suggests.
  • Ditch the screen: You are constantly looking at your phone or TV screen to pass time. It may seem like a break but actually it is not. “A break from screens, even for a few hours, can make you feel more present, connected, and in control of your time. Try swapping scrolling for stargazing, a long walk, or a real conversation.”
  • Stop, see, smile: When you’re always busy, life can feel like a never-ending to-do list. “Stepping back helps you reset, reflect, and make more intentional choices—about what you say yes to, what actually makes you happy, and what you can let go of,” she says.
  • Rest and refuel: Taking time for yourself doesn’t mean you care less about others, says Chavan. “It means you’re refueling so you can show up as your best self. When you’re rested and happy, you’re more present, patient, and engaged in your relationships,” she adds.
