Stress is a natural response that our body exhibits when faced with challenging or demanding situations. This response is triggered by the release of hormones, which prepare the body to either confront or escape the situation at hand. Common physical reactions to stress include an elevated heart rate, increased breathing, and heightened blood pressure. While stress can manifest as physical symptoms, it's important to note that not all stress is harmful.

In manageable amounts, stress can be beneficial, helping us accomplish tasks and avoid danger. However, stress affects everyone differently, and what might be stressful for one person may not be for another. Dr Mrinalini Rastogi of BHMS Global Hospital, Lucknow, lists down 10 physical signs of stress that are also a reminder to stay cautious and seek help.

Headaches: Stress often leads to tension headaches, characterised by dull, aching pain around the forehead or back of the head and neck. Chronic stress can cause these headaches to become frequent or severe, affecting your ability to concentrate and function effectively throughout the day.

Muscle tension: Stress triggers muscle tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and back, leading to discomfort or pain. Prolonged tension can result in chronic pain or stiffness, limiting mobility and affecting your posture. Managing stress and practising relaxation techniques can help alleviate this physical symptom.

Chest pain: Stress can cause chest pain or tightness due to increased heart rate and elevated blood pressure. While often harmless, this pain can mimic heart issues, making it crucial to differentiate between stress-induced discomfort and potential cardiac problems, especially if accompanied by other concerning symptoms.

Fatigue: Chronic stress can lead to persistent fatigue, even after rest. This exhaustion can stem from both mental and physical strain, disrupting daily activities and reducing overall energy levels. Fatigue related to stress can affect concentration, motivation, and emotional well-being, making it essential to address stressors.

Digestive problems: Stress impacts digestion, leading to symptoms like nausea, diarrhoea, or constipation. This occurs because stress hormones can disrupt normal digestive function, causing discomfort and irregular bowel movements. Persistent digestive issues linked to stress may require dietary adjustments and stress management techniques.

Sweating: Excessive sweating, especially in the palms, underarms, or feet, is a common stress response. This occurs as the body's "fight or flight" response activates, increasing perspiration to cool down. While usually harmless, excessive sweating can be uncomfortable and may indicate an underlying anxiety issue if persistent.

Jaw clenching/teeth grinding: Stress can lead to unconscious jaw clenching or teeth grinding, often during sleep. This can cause jaw pain, headaches, and even damage to teeth over time. Managing stress and using protective mouthguards at night can help mitigate the effects.

Shortness of breath: Stress can cause rapid, shallow breathing or a sensation of breathlessness. This happens as the body prepares for a "fight or flight" response, but it can lead to dizziness or panic if prolonged. Practising deep breathing and relaxation techniques can help manage this symptom.

Sleep disturbances: Stress often disrupts sleep patterns, causing insomnia or oversleeping. Racing thoughts, anxiety, or physical discomfort from stress can make it difficult to fall or stay asleep, leading to fatigue and decreased mental alertness. Developing healthy sleep habits and stress management can improve sleep quality.

Frequent illnesses: Chronic stress weakens the immune system, making you more susceptible to colds, infections, and other illnesses. The body's prolonged stress response depletes resources needed to fight off pathogens, leading to more frequent or severe illnesses. Managing stress is essential for maintaining a healthy immune system.
