Foods bad for hair health: Stay away from alcohol, artificial sweeteners, high mercury fish

A poor diet can lead to deficiencies that impair hair growth and health. Insufficient intake of essential nutrients can result in hair thinning, breakage, and even hair loss. Hair growth and health are significantly influenced by diet, as the nutrients we consume directly affect the condition and growth cycle of our hair. The hair follicle, a highly active component of the skin, relies on a steady supply of essential nutrients to function effectively. Proper nutrition not only supports the structure and strength of hair strands but also fosters a healthy scalp environment, which is crucial for hair growth.

Here are the food items that are bad for your hair growth suggested by Dr Mrinalini Kulkarni of R.B.S Global Healthcare, Indore.

Sugary foods: High sugar intake can cause insulin spikes, leading to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance can increase androgen levels, which are hormones that can shrink hair follicles and lead to hair thinning. Examples: Candy, sugary drinks, desserts, and other high-sugar snacks.

High glycemic index carbs: Foods with a high glycemic index cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. These spikes can lead to an increase in androgens, which can adversely affect hair follicles and contribute to hair loss. Examples: White bread, pastries, white rice, and other refined carbohydrates.

Fried foods: Fried foods often contain unhealthy fats and trans fats, which can increase levels of testosterone. Elevated testosterone can be converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone known to shrink hair follicles and cause hair loss. Examples: Fried chicken, French fries, and other deep-fried snacks.

Artificial sweeteners: Certain artificial sweeteners, like aspartame, have been linked to hair thinning and hair loss. The exact mechanism is unclear but may involve negative impacts on hair follicle health or nutrient absorption. Examples: Diet sodas, sugar-free gum, and other products containing aspartame or other artificial sweeteners.

Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to dehydration, which affects hair health. Alcohol can also lead to nutrient deficiencies (like zinc, iron, and other vital nutrients), and an increase in estrogen levels, all contributing to hair thinning and loss. Examples: Beer, wine, spirits, and cocktails.

Dairy products: Some people may have sensitivities or allergies to dairy products, causing inflammation and potential scalp issues. Additionally, dairy can increase sebum production, potentially leading to clogged hair follicles and hair thinning. Examples: Milk, cheese, yoghurt, and other dairy products.

Fish with high mercury levels: High mercury levels in certain fish can be toxic to the body and have been linked to hair loss. Mercury poisoning can interfere with protein synthesis and hair follicle health. Examples: Swordfish, mackerel, and certain types of tuna.

Processed foods: Processed foods often lack essential nutrients that are crucial for hair health. They may also contain preservatives, additives, and unhealthy fats that can negatively affect hair growth and scalp health. Examples: Fast food, packaged snacks, processed meats, and ready-to-eat meals.
