A healthy overall health status for a child depends on good indoor air quality. Given that children spend most of their time indoors — playing, studying and sleeping — indoor air plays a significant role in affecting their respiratory health and immunity. Bad indoor air can cause allergies, fatigue and breathing problems — especially for children with delicate lungs. Fortunately, cleaning up the air is not dependent on expensive purifiers or chemical sprays.
Small lifestyle changes and natural cleaning methods could mean the difference, says Dr. Rajiv Chhabra, Chief- Paediatric at Artemis Hospitals. With awareness and conscious choices within their influence, parents can keep the home a special, naturally fresh-clean safe place for their kids.
Here are some simple, natural ways to help keep the air in your home fresh and healthy for your kids.
Let Fresh Air In Every Day
Open the windows, front door (with the screen doors locked) and back door every morning and evening for 15 to 30 minutes. This allows fresh outdoor air to come in and stale indoor air to go out. Cross ventilation — which simply means opening windows on opposite sides of a room, so air moves around and gets rid of pollutants that are trapped inside.
Add Indoor Plants
A few houseplants can clean the air on their own. Some of those, including spider plants, peace lilies, snake plants and aloe vera absorb toxic compounds and release oxygen. You can put them in your child’s room, living room and next to windows. Just be sure they’re safe, and out of the hands of small children.
Keep Dust Under Control
Dust has allergens and bacteria and other unpleasant things within it.” Instead of a dry duster that just spreads the dust around, wipe down furniture, fans and shelves with a damp cloth. Vacuum carpets and rugs twice weekly with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a HEPA filter to minimize dust.
Avoid Synthetic Fragrances
Air fresheners, scented candles and artificial cleaners may smell good but they can do more harm to your lungs than anything else. Turn to natural things instead, like essential oil diffusers, baking soda to remove odors and lemon and vinegar for cleaning surfaces.
Maintain Clean Ventilation Systems
If you have air conditioning or exhaust fans, clean their filters frequently. An unclean filter catches dust and circulates dirty air throughout your home.
Use Natural Cleaning Products
Create your own mild sanitizing solutions rather than relying on harsh chemicals. Use vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice to clean surfaces and eradicate germs. These ingredients are also safe for your child and the environment.

Keep Humidity Levels Balanced
Mold thrives in wet air, and dry air can be irritating to the lungs. To keep the humidity in check, open windows when you take a shower or cook and employ indoor salt lamps or houseplants that aid in maintaining moisture levels constant.
Avoid Smoke Inside
Do not smoke or burn incense indoors. Children may have difficulty breathing if they inhale it just occasionally. If you’re cooking with spices or oil, open a window or them to escape out of the chimney.
It’s not that much work to keep the inside of your home clean, you just must maintain it and make good decisions. Your children can breathe, play and grow up alike in a home that is healthy, safe and filled up with fresh air from natural cleaning methods.
