  • Reports prompt calls for stricter packaged food quality controls

From simple sabzis to elaborate biryanis and curries, Everest Spices is a name that has been around in most kitchens in India for a long time. The brand is known for its ready-to-use spice mixes and flavors, and over time, it has built a reputation for itself. Recently, however, there have been reports of some safety concerns in some of the products offered by Everest Spices, according to laboratory tests carried out on some of its products.

Everest Spices Faces Quality Concerns

The development comes shortly after other well-known food brands such as Amul, Mother Dairy and Country Delight faced questions over the presence of coliform bacteria in certain products.

These samples were reportedly sent to a laboratory to determine whether they satisfied the safety requirements set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The products that were part of this test reportedly contained pesticide residues and bacterial contaminants, with some of them even exceeding the limits set by food safety regulations for such substances in food products.

Due to the widespread use of these spices in Indian homes, the claims quickly garnered attention online and sparked conversations about food safety laws.

What Is the Enterobacteriaceae Family of Bacteria?

According to the report, a sample of Everest Garam Masala contained levels of two pesticides—acetamiprid and azoxystrobin—that exceeded those permitted by FSSAI regulations. Elevated levels of bacteria were also reported in the sample.

Similarly, Everest Kitchen King Masala was said to contain the same bacterial group along with three pesticide residues above recommended levels.

The Enterobacteriaceae are a group of bacteria that are known to cause food contamination. Some of the well-known bacteria in this group are Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella enterica, both of which are well-known to cause food contamination.

Why Can These Bacteria Be Harmful?

If food contaminated with such bacteria is consumed, it may lead to gastrointestinal infections. Symptoms can include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and food poisoning.

In certain cases—especially among children, older adults or people with weakened immune systems—these infections can become more serious.

How Does Contamination Happen?

Food contamination can happen at various phases of the manufacturing process. Experts warn that improper handling, cleaning, and drying of raw ingredients during processing can lead to the development of bacteria in spices.

Bacterial growth can also be facilitated by unsanitary conditions during production, storage, or packaging.

The Bigger Food Safety Conversation

The reported findings have reignited discussions about food safety testing and quality control in packaged food products. Maintaining the safety and purity of spices is still crucial for public health because millions of households use them on a daily basis in tiny amounts.

Consumers are paying more attention to these reports, highlighting the industry's growing need for stricter quality controls and increased transparency.
