Eye symptoms like bulging, pressure, or changes in vision may indicate deeper problems than common conditions such as thyroid eye disease. Specialists emphasise the importance of early evaluation and advanced imaging to prevent serious complications and preserve vision.

Unusual symptoms around the eyes can sometimes signal hidden problems deep within the orbit. Dr Rituraj Baruah, Associate Director of Ophthalmology, Max Multi Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park, South Delhi, tells Moneycontrol, “Persistent eye bulging, pressure, or subtle changes in vision can sometimes be more than routine thyroid-related issues. Early detection is key to preventing permanent damage.”

Symptoms of eye diseases

He highlights the key signs to be aware of, such as:

  • A noticeable bulge in one or both eyes.
  • Deep aching or pressure behind the eye.
  • Blurred or double vision.
  • Changes in the way the eye moves.

“These symptoms may appear mild at first, but if they progress, it’s important to get a specialist opinion,” adds Dr Baruah.

Hidden orbital tumours are growths located behind the eyeball. They can slowly push the eye forward and place pressure on delicate structures such as the optic nerve. If left untreated, they can threaten vision.

Doctors emphasise that early imaging such as CT or MRI scans is crucial. “Advanced imaging allows us to see exactly what’s happening behind the eye and plan surgery carefully,” he explains.

How complex eye surgery works

Dr Baruah shares how complex eye surgery works:

Surgery for deep orbital tumours is delicate and precise. Key steps often include:

  • Creating a safe corridor by temporarily adjusting bone around the eye socket.
  • Carefully removing the tumour without affecting nearby nerves or muscles.
  • Repositioning any bone or tissue to restore normal structure.

Dr Baruah opines, “The goal is always to remove the growth safely while preserving vision and eye function. Precision and experience are critical.”
