Depression is usually treated as an emotional problem, but it has many effects on the body. Physical symptoms can set in before someone becomes aware they’re depressed, doctors say. Identifying these warning signs early can aid individuals in seeking appropriate support, ultimately benefiting their mental and physical well-being.

Depression is a mental health condition characterized by negative mood states, changes in thoughts and behaviour. But many don’t understand that it is also capable of giving some physical signs too. In fact, doctors say the body often seems to provide warning signs well in advance of a person acknowledging the emotional toll of depression.

The physical symptoms of depression are often ignored or confused for something else, like a medical problem. Fatigue, unexplained pain, sleep disturbances and changes in appetite are common complaints of people with depression. These symptoms happen because depression affects brain chemicals that control mood, sleep, pain perception and energy levels.

Dr Radhika Sharma, Consultant Psychiatrist at the NeuroCare Wellness in Noida, says depression is not a mere psychological illness. “Depression affects the entire body. Hormonal imbalance, stress responses and changes in brain chemistry may trigger various physical symptoms that patients frequently overlook,” she explains.

Being aware of these physical symptoms can help people identify depression sooner and talk to their doctor. Here are a few physical signs of depression that doctors often note in their patients.

Persistent Fatigue and Low Energy

A common physical symptom of depression is constant tiredness. People who are depressed don’t feel rested even when they’ve slept well. Routine chores become difficult, and even getting out of bed in the morning requires some semblance of willpower.

Sleep Disturbances

Depression can disrupt sleep patterns badly. Some people don’t sleep at all; they have insomnia and cannot get to or stay asleep. Others may sleep a lot and still feel exhausted. Disrupted sleep patterns often also exacerbate physical and emotional symptoms.

Unexplained Body Aches and Pain

Doctors say that many people who have depression complain of headaches, muscle pain, backaches or joint aches with no evident medical reason. Depression can ramp up pain hypersensitivity, so aches and pains register more acutely.

Changes in Appetite and Weight

Depression can affect appetite or cause over-eating. Some simply lose their appetite; others overeat for comfort. Over the long term, changes like these can result in considerable weight loss or gain.

Digestive Problems

Stomach problems, such as nausea or constipation, bloating and indigestion can also be caused by depression. Gut and brain are closely related, and emotional distress can adversely affect digestive health.

Slowed Movement or Restlessness

All may take place more slowly than usual: They may walk or talk or think just a bit slower than normal. Others, though, might grow restless and agitated.

Frequent Headaches

People living with depression also often report chronic headaches or migraines. Stress, muscle tension and fluctuations in brain chemistry are thought to contribute to these recurring headaches.

Reduced Immunity

Chronic depression has an effect on our immune system. This can make them more susceptible to infections or frequent colds and take longer to recover from illness.

Reduced Sexual Desire

Another physical symptom that doctors notice is a diminished interest in sexual activity. Hormonal fluctuations, low energy levels and emotional anguish can cause a decreased libido.
