The sudden demise of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg on September 19, 2025, has left the music world in shock. The 52-year-old icon, best known for lending his powerful voice to the evergreen track Ya Ali from Gangster (2006), died in Singapore following a scuba diving accident.

According to reports, he lost consciousness underwater, was rescued by Singapore police, and rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite intensive medical care, doctors could not revive him. Zubeen was in Singapore to perform at the North East Festival the following day. His untimely passing has created an irreplaceable void in the Indian music industry and among millions of fans who grew up with his songs.

This is not the first time the legendary singer’s health had made headlines. Back in March 2020, Zubeen Garg collapsed during an event at the Gauhati Town Club, Guwahati, which sent shockwaves across Assam. Attendees panicked when they saw the singer lose consciousness mid-event. People rushed to help, tried to give him water, and held him before he was immediately shifted to Nemcare Hospital.

At the hospital, he was admitted to the ICU for observation. His sister, Dr. Palme Borthakur, had assured fans at the time that he was recovering. She said, “He is far better now and recovering. Most probably he will very soon start working but not in the studio maybe. For a few days, he will be kept in the hospital itself for best.” Doctors had also planned to move him from the ICU to a general ward once his condition stabilized.

Friends close to Zubeen had revealed that his irregular lifestyle played a role in the health scare. They pointed out that he was not careful about his diet, skipped meals, and didn’t take proper rest, which eventually led to weakness and the collapse.

The incident triggered a massive outpouring of prayers and support. Politicians, colleagues, and fans across Assam and beyond prayed for his recovery. Social media was flooded with messages of hope, showing the kind of love and respect Zubeen commanded across communities.
