When Randhir Kapoor stood for Karisma for marrying Sunjay Kapur

Back in 2016, veteran actor Randhir Kapoor publicly voiced his anger following reports that his daughter, actress Karisma Kapoor, had cheated on him after marrying Delhi-based businessman Sunjay Kapur for financial gain.

These grave charges were revealed in a divorce petition that Sunjay's attorneys submitted to the Bandra Court in Mumbai. For a number of years, the couple had been embroiled in a contentious and widely reported legal dispute.

At the time, Randhir Kapoor had fiercely defended his daughter’s integrity and rejected any suggestion that she had exploited Sunjay, who was then the head of the leading auto components firm Sona Koyo Steering Systems.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, he had said, “Everyone knows our credentials. We are Kapoors. We don’t need to run after anyone’s money. We have been blessed with not only money, but our talent can support us for the rest of our lives.”

He had also revealed that he had never supported Karisma’s marriage to Sunjay. “Sunjay is a third class man. I never wanted Karisma marrying him. He has debauchery in his system and never cared for his wife. He has been giving bull** to her, and living with another woman. The entire Delhi knows how he is. I would not like to say anything more than this,”* Randhir had stated.

Karisma’s lawyer, Kranti Sathe, had also strongly denied the accusations, calling them “false” and noting that “the onus is on Sunjay to prove these allegations in the court.”

Sunjay and Karisma had married in 2003 and shared two children, Samaira and Kiaan. Karisma moved to Delhi post-marriage but returned to Mumbai in 2011 with the children. Though the couple initially filed for divorce by mutual consent, Karisma later withdrew the petition, alleging Sunjay had failed to fulfil financial obligations outlined in their agreement.

Tragically, Sunjay Kapur passed away last night at the age of 53 following a sudden heart attack. His death brings an unexpected and sorrowful close to a life once filled with controversy and legal strife, particularly surrounding his high-profile relationship with Karisma Kapoor.

As per Mumbai Mirror, the divorce petition he filed back in 2016 had included multiple serious claims, including accusations of emotional manipulation, family estrangement, and alleged infidelity. However, many of those allegations remained contested and unresolved in the public domain.
