Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Jaya Bachchan have long been regarded as an iconic trio that defined an unforgettable era in Bollywood. Among the many narratives that emerged from that golden period, one of the most widely-discussed and enduring was the rumoured relationship between Amitabh and Rekha. At the time, Amitabh Bachchan was already married to Jaya, yet his on-screen chemistry with Rekha sparked speculation about a possible off-screen romance. Though neither party ever publicly confirmed the relationship, it became one of the most talked-about controversies in the film industry.
What further fueled curiosity was the fact that following these rumours, Amitabh Bachchan never shared screen space with Rekha again, a decision that drew attention and raised countless questions over the years. Many assumed that this professional distancing hinted at unresolved tensions or choices made behind the scenes.
However, years later, Jaya Bachchan addressed the matter and shared the reason behind why Amitabh and Rekha chose not to work together again. Her statement offered a rare glimpse into a personal chapter of Bollywood history, shedding light on a decision that had remained a mystery for decades.

In a candid 2008 interview with People Magazine, Jaya Bachchan chose not to dodge the difficult questions and instead addressed them with remarkable honesty. When asked about the possibility of Amitabh Bachchan working with Rekha again, Jaya revealed that she had no personal objection to it. However, she believed that such a collaboration would inevitably spark widespread media frenzy and create unnecessary hype, shifting attention away from the actual work. According to her, the resulting “sensation” would overshadow the film itself, making it an unwise professional choice despite the absence of personal conflict.
She said, "Why should I mind? But I feel it will be more like a sensation than actual work. And that's a pity because one will miss the opportunity to see them together. Both of them probably realise it will go beyond work."
Jaya further remarked that had there been any truth to the rumours, Amitabh would have been with Rekha. "If there was any, he would have been somewhere else, na? People liked them as a couple on screen, and that's fine. The media tried linking him with every one of his heroines. My life would have been hell if I had taken it all seriously. We are made of sterner stuff, " the actor-politician stated.

In a separate interview with Stardust, Rekha had once recalled the time when Jaya watched Muqaddar Ka Sikandar starring Amitabh and Rekha and sobbed after seeing their romantic scenes together. Then eventually weeks later, Rekha was informed that Amitabh Bachchan no longer wants to work with her.
"A week later (after the trial show of Muqaddar Ka Sikandar), everybody in the industry was telling me that he (Amitabh Bachchan) had made it clear to his producers that he was not going to work with me. Everybody else informed me about it, but he didn't say a word on the subject. When I tried to question him about it, he said, I am not going to say a word. 'Don't ask me about it,'" the Namak Halal actress said.
While, Amitabh has worked with Jaya and Rekha separately in several films, the trio once featured in the 1981 iconic film, Silsila.
