Wes Anderson thrilled audiences at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with his film The Phoenician Scheme, which received an impressive 6.5-minute standing ovation.
The leading actress, Mia Threapleton, daughter of renowned actress Kate Winslet, was visibly moved, shedding tears of joy as the crowd erupted into applause.
Wes kept it simple in his thank you speech and stated, “I can think of about 12 words to say that stand for everything in this movie: Richard Ayoade, Riz, Alexandre, Michael, Mia, Jeffrey, Rupert, Benedict, God and Benicio del Toro.”
The Phoenician Scheme, Wes Anderson's most recent film, presents viewers with the fascinating world of Zsa-zsa Korda, a formidable business magnate played by actor Toro. Being one of the richest men in Europe, Korda's life takes a surprising turn when his daughter, Sister Liesel, decides to become a nun and live a life of devotion. The appearance of her tutor, Bjorn Lund, deepens the story by contributing layers of complexity and intrigue.
The film also features Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Mathieu Amalric, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Anderson also gave his previous film Moonrise Kingdom its world premiere to kick off the 2012 Cannes festival. At the 2023 festival, Wes Anderson's Asteroid City was vying for the Palme d'Or. Anderson's fourth submission to the Cannes competition is "The Phoenician Scheme.
The Phoenician Scheme is produced by Wes Anderson along with Jeremy Dawson and John Peet under the banner of American Empirical Pictures and Steven Rales under Indian Paintbrush.
The film is set to release in theatres on may 30 and will have a limited run at the screens till June 6.
