Renowned for her powerful performances and diverse roles in Hindi cinema, Vidya Balan has long been celebrated as one of Bollywood’s most versatile actors. From portraying emotionally layered characters to headlining women-centric stories, Vidya has carved a unique space for herself in the Indian film industry. But now, the actress appears ready to broaden her horizons—beyond national borders.
In a recent interview with Deadline (Cannes issue), Vidya openly expressed her desire to play captivating roles around the world. She made it apparent that she wanted to look into projects abroad that would provide the same level of complexity and depth for which she is renowned in India.
“I’d love to play (a character like) the therapist in Adolescence. That’s on the top of my mind at this point. I would love to do comedy. I absolutely loved Kate Winslet in The Regime. I also love the work Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon are doing,” she said.
Given her body of work, it is not surprising that the Tumhari Sulu star is interested in foreign films. When Vidya thought back on her previous roles, she emphasised her role as a single mother in Paa, where she raises a child with Progeria (played by Amitabh Bachchan).
She also talked about her endearing portrayal of a housewife turned radio jockey in Tumhari Sulu and her role as the title mathematical genius in Shakuntala Devi.
“In each of these films, there was an opportunity for me to do something different as an actor. They were well fleshed-out characters, and yet they were great scripts and very engaging, entertaining films,” she said, underscoring her preference for roles that offer both substance and storytelling.

On the work front, Vidya most recently starred with Triptii Dimri, Madhuri Dixit, and Kartik Aaryan in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. The movie was a critical and financial success when it was released around Diwali.
She previously starred in the romantic comedy Do Aur Do Pyaar, which was directed by Shirsha Guha Thakurta and starred Pratik Gandhi, Ileana D'Cruz, and Sendhil Ramamurthy.
Vidya Balan is dedicated to roles that entertain audiences both domestically and internationally while pushing her creative boundaries as she looks to the global stage.
