Veteran Bollywood actress Kamini Kaushal passes away at 98

Veteran actress Kamini Kaushal, one of the last surviving stars of Hindi cinema’s golden era, passed away at the age of 98. Her death closes a chapter of film history that began long before modern Bollywood existed, back when stories were simpler, emotions carried the weight of the world, and actors didn’t just play characters – they embodied eras.

Here’s the thing about Kamini Kaushal: her career wasn’t built on noise or spectacle. It was built on craft.

She debuted in the mid-1940s and quickly became one of the most sought-after leading women of her time.

From 1946 to 1963, she carried films with a natural screen presence that felt both elegant and grounded.

Her performances in Do Bhai (1947), Shaheed (1948), Nadiya Ke Paar (1948), Ziddi (1948), Shabnam (1949), Paras (1949), Namoona (1949), Arzoo (1950), Jhanjar (1953), Aabroo (1956), Bade Sarkar (1957), Jailor (1958), Night Club (1958) and Godaan (1963) are often cited as her finest work.

By the mid-60s, she shifted from lead roles to strong character parts, a move that revived her career rather than limiting it. Her powerful performance in Shaheed (1965) earned widespread praise, proving that longevity in cinema has nothing to do with age and everything to do with conviction.

She continued working through the 70s as well, appearing in Do Raaste (1969), Prem Nagar (1974), Maha Chor (1976) and Anhonee (1973), quietly building a filmography that younger actors would envy.

Kamini Kaushal was known to keep a dignified distance from the spotlight, even at the peak of her fame. That grace continued until her final days.

Confirming her passing, a source told journalist Vickey Lalwani, “Kamini Kaushal’s family is extremely low profile, and needs privacy.”

Her loss isn’t just the passing of an actress. It’s the departure of someone who lived through the very evolution of Indian cinema, from black-and-white frames to the digital age, without ever losing her quiet strength.
