Uma Dasgupta, renowned for her portrayal of 'Durga' in Satyajit Ray's legendary film 'Pather Panchali', passed away on Monday at a private hospital, according to family sources.
The 84-year-old actress, who had been battling cancer for an extended period, is survived by her daughter, family sources confirmed.
Chiranjeet informed Anandabazar Patrika that he met Uma's daughter in the morning and learned that her mother had passed away. He shared, "Uma di's daughter informed me that she is no more. She was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago."
After being diagnosed with cancer, Uma Dasgupta underwent medical treatment and initially responded well. However, the cancer returned, and she was later admitted to a local hospital in Kolkata for further treatment. Unfortunately, she passed away there.
Cast as Durga in 'Pather Panchali' at the age of 14, Uma Dasgupta became a beloved figure in world cinema for her portrayal of the character. Adapted from Bibhutibhusan Bandyopadhyay's novel, her performance immortalized iconic scenes, such as Durga drenched in the rain and picking mangoes in an orchard with her younger brother Apu after a nor’wester.

Dasgupta was noticed by Ray during her stage performance as a child artist in a school function and the director got in touch with her school and family.
Despite the worldwide acclaim and applause for her role in 'Pather Panchali', she retreated into her private space and was never seen in any other film later on..
Uma Dasgupta was a teacher by profession, in addition to her acting career.
