Trisha Krishnan donates mechanical Elephant to Tamil Nadu temples

Trisha Krishnan, a well-known actress and animal welfare activist, has made a significant contribution to Tamil Nadu's temple culture by giving a life-sized mechanical elephant to Sri Ashtabhuja Athisesha Varahi Amman and Sri Ashtalinga Athisesha Selva Vinayagar.

With compassion for animals at the core of tradition, the gesture represents a progressive shift towards ethical worship practices.

Gaja, the lovably named animatronic elephant, debuted at the temples on Friday. Trisha also kindly sponsored a plant-based feast for all of the devotees in attendance to mark the occasion, tying her dedication to animal welfare with the spirit of the gathering.

In a statement shared by the organisation People For Cattle In India (PFCI), Trisha expressed her joy and purpose behind this thoughtful donation.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of this beautiful moment. Devotion shines brightest when it’s rooted in compassion. Welcoming a mechanical elephant into our temple traditions is a celebration of kindness, innovation, and culture.”

She further added, “We are honouring our heritage in a way that brings no harm, only harmony. This gesture stands as a proud symbol of progress, where faith and empathy walk hand in hand. I hope it inspires many more to embrace a future where love leads our rituals, and no being suffers in the name of tradition.”

PFCI took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank Trisha for her contribution, sharing images and videos of Gaja. Their post read: “Thank you, @trishtrashers for working with us. Gaja signals a new beginning—where real elephants are free, and traditions continue at Sri Ashtalinga Athisesha Selva Vinayagar and Sri Ashtabhuja Athisesha Varahi Amman temples in Tamil Nadu.”

Alongside, a vegan meal was served to devotees, accompanied by a board that read, “Just like our lifelike mechanical elephant promotes kindness to real elephants, vegan food shows respect to animals by leaving them off our plates…”
