Hollywood icon Tom Cruise has opened up about the extreme challenges he faced while filming a daring stunt for his upcoming spy thriller, Mission: Impossible 8. The 62-year-old actor revealed that he frequently lost consciousness while hanging upside down from a plane at an altitude of 10,000 feet.
Known for pushing the limits in action cinema, Cruise has performed several high-risk stunts throughout his career, from clinging to a moving train to skydiving and even scaling the Burj Khalifa. However, he admitted that this particular sequence in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning proved to be one of his toughest yet. In an interview with Empire magazine, Cruise shared that the lack of oxygen at such a high altitude made the stunt especially grueling, challenging even his well-honed endurance.
"When you stick your face out, going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen. So I had to train myself how to breathe. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit," he said.
The thrilling stunt, which features Tom Cruise hanging from the wing of a 1930s Boeing Stearman biplane, was first teased in the movie's trailer released two months ago.
On Friday, Cruise gave fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the intense sequence, sharing a video on his X handle with the caption "Hang on." Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning sees Cruise reprise his iconic role as Agent Ethan Hunt, a character he has portrayed since the franchise's inception in 1996. The film marks his reunion with director Christopher McQuarrie, who has been steering the Mission: Impossible series since Rogue Nation (2015).
Produced by Paramount Pictures and Skydance, the film also features Hayley Atwell and Vanessa Kirby in key roles. It is set for a grand theatrical release in May.
